INTERVISTA ESCLUSIVA A MICHAEL SEGAL PROTAGONISTA DI COLOUR FROM THE DARK - A cura di Sabina Mazzoldi Pfeifer
Dopo Debbie Rochon, intervistata dal collega di Redazione Davide Rossato (QUI l'intervista), è la volta di Michael Segal, protagonista maschile e per certi versi presenza fissa nell’opera cinematografica di Ivan Zuccon, da From Beyond a Nympha e per finire, quest'ultimo film Colour from the Dark, che sarà presentato alla 61^ edizione del Festival del cinema di Cannes, nel maggio 2008.
SC - Ciao Michael, puoi parlarci del tuo personaggio nel film di Ivan Zuccon?
MS - Oh bene, il nome del mio personaggio in Colour
from the Dark è Pietro. E’ un uomo davvero di carattere,
forte fisicamente anche se con un handicap alla gamba sinistra, a causa
del quale non ha potuto combattere durante la guerra con i suoi 3 fratelli.
E’ Innamorato e fedelissimo alla moglie Lucia, nonché affezionato
alla di lei sorella, Alice.
E’ un lavoratore strenuo, un fattore avvezzo alla fatica e al sacrificio,
ma sempre preoccupato per i fratelli.
Insomma un brav’uomo, onesto, semplice e affidabile che vive in
una dignitosa povertà.
La sua vita però cambia inaspettatamente, a causa della scoperta
di un’entità diabolica, liberata per caso all’interno
del pozzo. E’ in questo frangente che il mondo intorno a lui muta
in un terribile incubo ed egli affronta questa nuova realtà con
la semplicità della mente, opponendo la sua forza ed il suo cuore
all’infinita malvagità che consuma la vita di ogni cosa e
di tutti coloro di cui si prende cura, in un rivolgimento di eventi che
condurrà ad un’ultima (finale) e terrificante verità.

SC - Hai lavorato praticamente in ogni film di Ivan Zuccon. Quali sono le principali differenze tra quelle esperienze e il set di Colour from the Dark? Il tuo rapporto con il regista e il cast?
MS - Ho iniziato a lavorare con Ivan davvero giovanissimo ( ride). Ho fatto 5 corti con lui quando abbiamo realizzato From Beyond (L’altrove), e in successione Unknown Beyond, Darkness Beyond, Shunned House, Nympha e per finire ora Colour from the Dark. Ivan va perfezionando il suo stile di film in film. Ma il grande cambiamento lo si avverte a partire da Nympha. Budget superiore, maggiore disponibilità dell’attrezzatura, cast internazionale, uno script migliore. Ma Colour from the Dark è ancora meglio: l’opera di un maestro, con un cast incredibile, una notevole disponibilità tecnica, un set impressionante e una grandissima sceneggiatura. Ivan ha davvero un dono: sa come raccogliere intorno a sé quelli che davvero amano il cinema. Lui e i suoi genitori e incredibile, la selezionata cerchia di persone e collaboratori, sempre cortese, qualificata ed entusiasta. In Nympha e in Colour mi sono trovato a lavorare con attori da più parti del mondo e a recitare in inglese. Penso di preferire recitare in lingua inglese e lavorare con attori stranieri. Questo mi ha spinto a dare il meglio di me, andare oltre quelli che ho ritenuto essere miei limiti, ed è così che ho scoperto che non ho limiti.

SC - Qual è il tuo rapporto con il cinema di genere, i film dell’orrore (ma non solo), e come ha influito ciò sulla tua formazione e crescita di attore?
MS - Alcuni horror hanno ancora il potere di atterrirmi.
Preferisco film dell’orrore che non sono basati su effetti speciali,
grandi spargimenti di sangue senza senso; rimango ancora spaventato da
tutti quei film sul diavolo. E’ Strano, sono specializzato in film
del terrore, e questo perchè ho deciso che volevo fare l’attore
quando avevo 6 anni dopo aver visto Artisti e Modelle con Jerry
Lewis. Andai da mia madre e le dissi:"Voglio diventare un attore
comico. Voglio far ridere la gente".
Adoro i film e sono cresciuto con le pellicole degli anni ’80, quando
un eroe era un eroe, buono, onorevole e rispettabile, forte e pronto al
sacrificio. In tale senso ho cercato davvero di emulare tutti i miei eroi.
Ho studiato recitazione per 5 anni in Italia e negli Stati Uniti, e ho
voluto all’inizio della mia carriera, specializzarmi in action movies
e commedie brillanti. Ivan spesso mi mette alla prova perché mi
offre personaggi troppo differenti da quello che sono io in realtà,
ma…Hey, questo è il lavoro dell'attore.

SC - Tornando a Colour from the Dark, si è parlato di qualche incidente e infestazioni come nella miglior tradizione dei più impressionanti horror movies da L’Esorcista di Friedkin a Dust Devil: the Final Cut di Richard Stanley. L'hai visto anche tu Trevor (o come Debbie Rochon ha ribattezzato il fantasma sul set durante le riprese)?
MS - Trevor! Sì, tu cosa sai? Non parlo spesso di questo ma ho una sorta di potere…(ecco che l’argomento si fa interessante). Posso assorbire l’energia spirituale di un luogo dove ci sono stati violenti accadimenti. Se invece mi trovo a dormire in un posto teatro di delitti, ho come dei sogni rivelatori della storia di quel posto. E questo tipo di esperienza è sempre piuttosto intensa perché sogno e vedo con gli occhi delle vittime. Questo è il motivo per cui sono sempre un pò atterrito all’idea di trascorrere la notte in un posto nuovo. La cosa divertente è che ogni volta che vedo Trevor in un'immagine, lo sento vicino, dentro, al di là, oppure a fissarmi, ma...non mi fa mai del male né rovina o danneggia le mie cose...

E DOPO QUESTA INCREDIBILE RIVELAZIONE, L'ULTIMA DOMANDA
SC - Sei un personaggio davvero accattivante e il set di Colour from the Dark, sembra promettere e suscitare già violente emozioni come nei precedenti e straordinari film di Ivan (Nympha e Bad Brains sono i miei preferiti), ma se il regista fossi tu, volendo continuare l’opera di trasposizione di Lovecraft, quale sarebbe la tua novella preferita (e in alternativa a Lovecraft, c'è qualche altro scrittore horror che ti piacerebbe riproporre e adattare per lo schermo)?
MS- Mi piacciono L’orrore di Dunwich e Dagon, ma non vorrei fare il regista, preferisco essere l’attore principale. Per la cronaca, al momento non leggo libri dell’orrore. Preferisco gli eroici fantasy. C’è questo incredibile romanzo di Terry Brooks, Le Magiche Pietre di Shannara, che è piuttosto pauroso al punto che si potrebbe trarne un film davvero cool…Sarebbe senz’altro un colossal come Il Signore degli Anelli. Mi propongo per il ruolo di Allanon…Lo adoro totalmente.
SC - Grazie di cuore per la disponibilità,
non vedo l’ora di vedere il film e sorprendermi di una delle tue
(lo so già), migliori e fantastiche interpretazioni.

After Debbie Rochon interview, let’s talk with Michael Segal, actor present in a lot of pictures of Ivan Zuccon, from Darkness Beyond to Nympha and at last, main character of Colour from the Dark, announced in may 2008, for the 61st edition of the Cannes Festival.
SC - Hi Michael, can you talk about your character in Colour from the Dark?
MS - Oh well, the name of my character in Colour
from the Dark is Pietro. He is a very strong man, physically and
mentally, with an handicap at his left leg, which is the reason because
of he is not fighting in the war with his 3 brothers. He his a very faithful
man, in love with his wife Lucia and very fond to Alice (his wife's sister).
He is a though worker, a farmer, used to fatigue and sacrifice, always
worried for his 3 brothers.
A good man, honest, simple and reliable that lives in his dignified poverty.
His life suddently changes, because of the discover of an evil entity,
set free by chance in his well. The world around him become a terrible
nightmare and he faces this new reality with his simple mind, opposing
his strenght and his heart to this infinite evilness that consumes the
life of everything and everybody he cares about, in a turn of events that
will end to the final frightening truth.

SC - You worked in many pictures directed by Ivan Zuccon. Which are main differences between those experiences and the set of Colour from the dark? Your relation with the director and the cast?
MS - I started to work with Ivan when I was very young...(heheh) I made 5 shorts with Ivan and then we shoot From Beyond. I shoot with him Unknown Beyond, Darkness Beyond, Shunned House, Nympha and now Colour from the Dark. He improved his style movie after movie. I noticed the big change from Nympha. More budget, more equipment, foreign actors, better script. Colour from the dark is even more professional, with an incredible cast, impressive set, a lot of technical equipment and a great script. Ivan has a gift. He knows how to surround himself with people that loves movies. He and his parents and incredible, the crew he chooses is always polite, qualified and enthusiastic. In Nympha and Colour I found myself working with foreign actors and acting in english. I think I prefered to act in english and working with foreign actors forced me to do my very best, going beyond thoose I thought were my limits, so I discovered I have no limits.

SC - How do you relate to horror movies (and not only). And the influences of this genre in your training and actor's development?
MS - Some horror movies have still the power to frighten
me. I prefer the horror movies not based on the special effects, lot of
blood without sense, and I am still scared by movies on devil. It's strange
I specialized in horror movies because I decided to be an actor when I
was 6 years old after I watched the movie "Artist and Models"
with Jerry Lewis. I went to my mother and said: "I want to be a comic
actor. I want to make people laugh."
I love watching movies, I grew up with 80's movies, when an hero was a
real hero, good, honorable, respectful, strong and ready to sacrifice
and I tried to emulate my favourite heroes of course. I studied 5 years
acting in Italy and USA and I wanted at the beginning to specialize in
action movies and in brillant comedy. Ivan always challenge me because
he offer me always character soooooo different from what I am in real
life, but hey, that's the actor job!

SC - Apropos of Colour from the dark: there are rumours about accidents and infestations as best tradition of most impressive horror movies from The Exorcist ( Friedkin) to Dust Devil: the Final Cut (Richard Stanley). Have you seen you too, Trevor (Debbie Rochon choosed the ghost’s name throughout shooting)?
MS - Trevor! Yes... You know what? I don't speak often of this but I have a kind of power (I can absorbe spiritual energy in a place where something violent happened in the past. If I sleep in a place where somebody got killed I dream of it before knowing the history of the place. And the experience is always hard because I dream and I see with the eyes of the victims. That's why I am always scared to sleep in a new place. The funny thing is that every time we saw Trevor in a picture, he was next to me, inside me, beside me, watching me... He never hurt me or damaged my things.

AND AFTER THIS INCREDIBLE DISCLOSURE, THE LAST QUESTION:
SC - You are a person really charismatic and the movie, Colour from the Dark, seems promise and move a certain violent excitement like the previous and oustanding Ivan’s films (Nympha e Bad Brains are some of my favourite movies ). If you are director, continuing to transpose Lovecraft’s work, what should be your favourite novel, and besides Lovecraft, is there any other horror writer would you like to propose for the screen?
MS - I love Dunwich Horror and Dagon, but I don't want to be the director, but the lead actor! In case I actually don't read horror books, I prefer heroic fantasy. There is this incredible book of Terry Brooks: The magical stones of Shannara that is scary enough to be a very cool movie... Should be a colossal like Lord of Rings... I propose myself for the role of Allanon... Love you all!
