SC - Sul tuo Sito Ufficiale ti definisci “Italiano al 100%”. Ci racconti in breve la storia delle tue origini e come mai la tua famiglia è arrivata dall’Italia sino in America?

Dunque, le mie origini sono Italiane, entrambe i miei genitori sono nati in Italia, ma io venni in America da piccolo. Sebbene non abbia mai conosciuto i miei nonni, suppongo siano venuti qui in cerca di un nuovo stile di vita, non proprio buono visto che entrambi morirono all'età di 50 anni. Sono molto orgoglioso di essere Italiano al 100% e me ne vanto ogni volta che ne ho l'occasione. Gli Italiani dominano! E poi noi siamo anche delle persone così dannatamente di bell'aspetto.

SC - Da semplice lettore appassionato di Romanzi Horror, tu stesso sei poi diventato un autore di successo. Come è avvenuto questo passaggio e quando hai capito che il tuo sogno stava diventando realtà?

Era come uno sfizio, davvero. In tutta la mia vita sono sempre andato alla ricerca di forme di espressioni creative. Nei miei primi vent'anni, ho suonato la chitarra in una rock band, passione che si è esaurita nel momento in cui ho compiuto 27 anni. Ero un grande fan dell'horror, sia dal punto di vista cinematografico che letterario, e decisi che sarebbe stato divertente scrivere qualche storia spaventosa di mio pugno. Così ho venduto la mia chitarra e comprato un computer portatile. Attraverso qualche anno di prove ed errori, col tempo ho imparato le basi di come scrivere un buon romanzo horror, e ho iniziato a pubblicare alcune storie. Dopodichè scrissi il mio primo romanzo, ATMOSPHERE, che vendetti alla Leisure Books dopo una "pitch session" con l'editore Don D’Auria. Da allora ho venduto altri tre romanzi e oltre 100 racconti brevi. Così il mio sogno di diventare un autore è diventato una realtà, ma il mio sogno definitivo sarebbe quello di fare questo come lavoro a tempo pieno a tutti gli effetti.

SC - Parliamo ora di una tua grande opera, DEEP IN THE DARKNESS (Dal profondo delle Tenebre). La storia è ambientata in una piccola cittadina del New England, Ashborough, un luogo apparentemente tranquillo ma che in realtà cela un orribile segreto di cui nessuno vuole parlare. E’ un romanzo che ci ha ricordato molto alcune storie del mitico H.P. Lovecraft: sei d’accordo con questa nostra affermazione?

Molti recensori hanno fatto questa valutazione, e credo che questo sia per via della voce del narratore. Per qualche ragione, ogni volta che scrivo una storia narrandola in prima persona, il tono della mia voce prende dei connotati "Lovecraftiani". Io non so davvero il perchè, semplicemente accade così. Quando provo a realizzare questo tipo di tono quando scrivo in terza persona, la prosa diventa macchinosa. Quando butti giù un plot, a ciò si aggiunge il presupposto che questo debba essere ispirato a Lovecraft. Certamente non è stata una cosa intenzionale. Francamente poi non ho letto molto di Lovecraft, tranne che pochi racconti brevi.

SC - Ashborough è una splendida località turistica, c’è un motivo particolare per cui hai scelto quest’ultima come location principale degli incubi di DAL PROFONDO DELLE TENEBRE?

E' una città di fantasia, in realtà non sono mai stato nel New Hampshire. Sapevo di aver bisogno di un'ambientazione di campagna e dal momento che ho voluto che il mio dottore (il dottor Michael Cayle del romanzo) provenisse da Manhattan, mi è sembrato naturale che si muovesse verso nord. Stephen King ha messo sotto chiave tutto il Maine, così mi sono mosso in uno stato differente. Ho fatto diverse ricerche sul New Hampshire e sulla sua geografia, realizzando che sarebbe potuto essere il luogo perfetto per quello che avevo progettato di fare.

SC - Permettici di farti i nostri complimenti per la recente nomina di DAL PROFONDO DELLE TENEBRE ai Bram Stoker Award. Insieme al tuo romanzo ci sono opere di autori del calibro di Stephen King o Peter Straub: che effetto ti ha fatto trovarti fra questi storici nomi?

Grazie davvero! Beh, è un sogno che diventa realtà. Questi sono scrittori che io leggevo molto prima che decidessi di scrivere per conto mio, è una sensazione dannatamente bella. Hey, so di essere un novellino e che non potrei che lustrare le loro scarpe, ma è splendido sapere che i miei colleghi nel campo rispettino il mio lavoro abbastanza da conferirgli una così alta considerazione. E' una cosa che mi rende davvero onorato.

SC - Una delle doti fondamentali che deve possedere un’opera letteraria in generale, è quella di riuscire a tenere sempre viva l’attenzione nel lettore. In un romanzo Horror questo aspetto diventa ancora più importante e complesso da realizzare. Quando scrivi i tuoi romanzi, tieni sempre in considerazione il “fattore paura” oppure è qualcosa che ti viene spontaneo?

Io scrivo libri che penso possano appassionare chi li legge. Amo una lettura piena di suspense che mi tenga incollato alla sedia. Così questo è quello che spero di poter realizzare. So che ci sono persone che amano i miei libri e altri no, ma so che la maggior parte di quelli che iniziano a leggere i miei libri arrivano sino alla fine, poichè io creo un'atmosfera di mistero che loro desiderano esplorare di pagina in pagina. Amo l'horror e tutti i suoi sottogeneri, e in tutti e cinque i miei romanzi io ho esplorato sfumature differenti, stili differenti di raccontare una storia. Non saprai mai cosa ti attende leggendo i miei libri, essi sono completamente diversi l'uno dall'altro. Sono tutti collocati in un livello di paura e mistero che persiste costantemente.

SC - L’orrore che descrivi nei tuoi romanzi è spesso legato a qualcosa che scaturisce dalle nostre paure più recondite, degli incubi spaventosi che nascono dalla nostra mente e lentamente diventano realtà. Queste sono anche le tue paure?

Certamente. Io scrivo le cose che ritengo mi possano spaventare...e non sono uno che si spaventa facilmente. Insieme a questi aspetti però la scrittura deve caricarsi di stati d'animo: dev'essere dark e dovrebbe convogliare in sè un senso di paranoia e claustrofobia. Esattamente come i miei incubi, beh, io provo una sorta di divertimento nell'avere incubi. Chiamami folle, ma quando ti svegli con il sudore freddo, il cuore che ti scoppia, beh, non c'è niente di più esilarante!

SC - Il tuo nuovo romanzo si chiama THE DEMONOLOGIST. Ci puoi anticipare di cosa parla?

THE DEMONOLOGIST parla di un uomo, una rockstar che viene posseduta dal Demonio. E' come EYES WIDE SHUT che incontra HELLRAISER, con alcuni riferimenti a L'ESORCISTA. Questo è il mio romanzo più spaventoso, accadono molte situazioni raccapriccianti in questo libro. La storia viene raccontata in modo molto serioso, non c'è nulla di sdolcinato qui. E' un romanzo ricolmo di horror, uno di quelli che spero faccia contorcere sulla sedia i più navigati lettori di libri horror.

SC - Sappiamo che hai scritto oltre cento racconti pubblicati in diverse raccolte di successo. Quando scrivi una storia, sai già da subito che diventerà un libro o un racconto, oppure lo capisci mentre la stai realizzando?

La maggior parte delle storie vengono scritte come dei racconti indipendenti. DAL PROFONDO DELLE TENEBRE iniziò come racconto breve, poi come una Trilogia, poi si è evoluto in un romanzo. Non c'è nessun'altra cosa che ho scritto che ha seguito questo iter, sebbene possegga un buon numero di racconti brevi che sarebbe divertente poter estendere in un lavoro più lungo. Al momento non ho idee per racconti brevi, ma semmai dovesse capitare mi divertirò a prendere uno di questi e a trasformarlo in un romanzo.

SC - Quali sono i tuoi progetti futuri?

Il mio racconto, “Fires Rising”, apparirà nel libro ON A PALE HORSE, che sarà pubblicato dalla Harbinger Books nel mese di Ottobre (conterrà anche dei racconti dei miei amici Tim Lebbon, Brian Keene, e Gord Rollo). Al momento sto lavorando su un nuovo romanzo intitolato sperimentalmente “DEAD SOULS”, che tratterà il tema della magia nera; spero potrà essere pubblicato per il prossimo anno. Un racconto breve apparirà in Lost On The Darkside (il quarto numero della serie), e in Surreal Magazine. Per il prossimo anno sto progettando di scrivere un romanzo sugli zombie. Spero anche di poter lavorare ancora con la Gargoyle in futuro!

INTERVIEW WITH MICHAEL LAIMO

SC - On your official website, you define yourself “100% Italian”. Can you briefly tell us the story of your origins and why your family went to America from Italy?

Well, my heritage is Italian, as both of my parents were born in Italy, but came to America as children. Although I never knew my grandparents, it is my assumption that they came here to find a new way of life—little good it did them as they all died by the age of 50. I am very proud to be 100% Italian, and brag the fact whenever I can. Italians rule! And we’re a damn good-looking group of people too.

SC - As a common Horror Novels reader, you became a successful author. How did this change happen and when did you understand your dream was becoming reality?

It was on a whim, really. All my life, I’d always sought some form of creative release. Through my early twenties, I’d played guitar in a rock band, and had pretty much burned out from that scene by the time I turned 27. I was a big horror fan, both of movies and literature, and decided it might be fun to write some scary stories of my own. So, I sold my guitar and bought a laptop. Through a few years of trial and error, I eventually learned the basics of how to write good horror fiction, and started publishing some short stories. Soon thereafter, I wrote my first novel ATMOSPHERE, which I eventually sold to Leisure Books after attending a pitch session with editor Don D’Auria. Since then I’ve sold three more novels, and over 100 short stories. So, my dream of becoming a published author has become a reality, but my ultimate dream is that I would be able to do this as a full-time career.

SC - Let’s talk about one of your great works, DEEP IN THE DARKNESS. The story takes place in a small town in New England, Ashborough, an apparently quiet place which actually hides a horrible unspeakable secret. This novel has reminded us about some of H.P. Lovecraft’s stories: do you agree with this statement?

Many reviewers have commented on the similarity, and I believe that it is because the voice of the narrator. For some reason, whenever I write in a first-person narrative, the tone of my voice takes on a ‘Lovecraftian’ tone. I really don’t know why, it just happens. When I try to accomplish this sort of tone while writing in a third-person point-of-view, the prose comes out clunky. When you throw in the plot, it adds to the assumption that this might be Lovecraftian-inspired. It certainly wasn’t intentional to do this. Frankly, I haven’t read much Lovecraft, outside of a few short stories.

SC - Ashborough is a wonderful touristic resort, is there a particolar reason for choosing it as the main location for the nightmares in DEEP IN THE DARKNESS?

It’s a fictional town. I’ve never been to New Hampshire, actually. I knew that I had to have a rural setting, and being that I’d wanted my doctor to come from Manhattan, it seemed only natural to have him move up north. Stephen King has Maine all locked up, so I went with a different state. I did a bit of research on New Hampshire and its geography, and realized that it would make the perfect setting for what I’d planned to do.

SC - Please let us give you our compliments for recent nomination in Bram Stoker Awards with DEEP IN THE DARKNESS. Together with it, works from author of great caliber such as Stephen King and Peter Straub: how did you feel about being amongst these historic names?

Thank you so much! Well, it’s a dream come true, actually. These are the writers I was reading long before I even decided to write myself, so it feels so darn good. Hey, I know I’m the new kid on the block, and that talent wise, I couldn’t shine their shoes. But, it’s nice to know that my peers in the field respect my work enough to bestow it with such a mark of respect. That, in and of itself, is something I am truly honoured of.

SC - One of the main qualities which marks a literature work in general, is to always keep alive the reader’s attention. This becomes more important and complex in a horror novel. As you write your novels, do you constantly keep in mind the “fear factor” or is it something that comes out spontaneously?

I write the books I think I would enjoy reading. I love a suspenseful read that keeps me on the edge of my seat. So, this is what I attempt to accomplish. I know that there people out there that love my books, and others that don’t. But I know that most people who start my books end up finishing them because I create an air of mystery that they need to explore by turning the pages. I love horror, and all its subgenres, and with all five of my novels, I’ve explored different tones, different ways of telling my story. You’ll never know exactly what to expect when reading my books, they’re all very different from one another. Yet, they all share a level of fear and mystery that stays constant throughout.

SC - The horror you describe in your novels is often linked to things born from our deepest fears, the scary nightmares in our mind, and slowly become reality. Are these your fears too?

Of course. I write about the things that I think would scare me, and I’m not easily scared. But, in conjunction with scary things, the writing has to carry with it a sense of mood. It must be dark, and it should convey a sense of paranoia, and claustrophobia. As for my nightmares, well, I sort of enjoy having nightmares. Call me weird, but when you wake up in a cold sweat, heart pounding, well, there’s nothing more exhilarating!

SC - Your new novel is titled THE DEMONOLOGIST. Could you anticipate some of it?

THE DEMONOLOGIST is about a man, a rock star, who becomes possessed by The Devil. It’s EYES WIDE SHUT meets HELLRAISER, with a few nods to THE EXORCIST. I will say that this is my most horrific, visceral novel to date. Many gruesome things happen in this book. Still, I feel the story is told in a serious tone. There’s nothing campy here. It’s a full-force horror novel, one that I hope leaves the most seasoned horror reader squirming in their seat.

SC - We know you wrote more than a hundred stories, published in several successful collections. As you write a story, you already know it will become a book or a tale, or you get to know it during its first draft?

Most stories are written as stand-alone pieces. Deep in the Darkness started out as a short story, then a trilogy, and then evolved into a novel. But nothing else I’ve written has done this for me, although I do have a number of short stories that might be fun extending into fuller-length pieces. I am not short of novel ideas right now, but if I ever do get stuck, I’ll entertain taking a short story into novel land.

SC - What are your future plans?

My novella, “Fires Rising”, will appear in the book, ON A PALE HORSE, to be released from Harbinger Books in October (this will also feature novellas from my horror bubbas Tim Lebbon, Brian Keene, and Gord Rollo). I’m currently working on a new novel tentatively entitled “DEAD SOULS”, an original take on black magic, which will hopefully be published sometime next year. Short fiction is due to appear in Lost On The Darkside (#4 in the series), and Surreal Magazine. Next year I plan on writing a zombie novel. I also hope to be working with Gargoyle again in the future!
