Ho conosciuto Tor in occasione della Splattercontainer Night, che ho organizzato per gli Splatter Maniacs che sono venuti a trovarmi a Santa Maria di Leuca mentre ero ospite come giurato del Salento Fear Festival. It Came From The West è stato infatti uno dei Cortometraggi che ho presentato durante la serata (un pò riduttivo chiamarla serata visto che siamo andati avanti sino alle 4:30 del mattino) e circa un mese fà Tor ed io abbiamo avuto una simpatica chiacchierata virtuale, divenuta poi una vera e propria intervista che ho il piacere di presentarvi qui di seguito. SC - Come nasce la tua passione per l'animazione in genere e quando hai deciso che sarebbe diventata la tua professione, insieme a quella del regista?
TF - Ho disegnato piccoli fumetti e strani mostri per tutta la mia infanzia; il mio amore per i film iniziò con titoli come Alien, Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Terminator e così via. Ho iniziato con il progetto di zombiewestern dopo una serie di video musicali ed un cortometraggio davvero pessimo. L'ultimo anno sono stato ammesso alla Danish Film School e mi mancano tre anni.
SC - I primi personaggi che vengono in mente durante la visione di It Came From The West sono ovviamente i celebri Muppets. Sei anche tu un fan dei mitici pupazzi di Jim Henson?
TF - Certo!!! Jim Henson ha creato così tante cose belle ed ora c'è uno spazio vuoto che aspetta di essere riempito. Penso che le persone saranno sempre affascinate dai pupazzi, per lo meno io lo sarò sempre. Il 3D sta prendendo il controllo sulle creature fantastiche che vediamo nei film oggi, ma manca la magia, qualcosa di reale.
SC - Ci sono moltissimi omaggi all’indimenticabile Spaghetti Western nel tuo cortometraggio. Quali sono i tuoi Italian Western preferiti?
TF - Sergio Leone è in assoluto il mio regista preferito di tutti i tempi. Non ho visto molti Italian Western oltre quelli suoi, ma Django di Sergio Corbucci è un altra di quelle pellicole grandiose.
SC - Unire il western al genere horror è una strada ancora poco sfruttata nel cinema. Tu come hai avuto questa idea?
TF - Davvero non me lo ricordo, penso solo che i due generi si incastrino perfettamente fra loro. La polvere e lo sporco insieme con il sangue e le budella, è perfetto. Penso ci sia molto da esplorare in questo universo, il cortometraggio è solo un piccolo assaggio...
SC - Hai mai pensato di girare un film con attori in carne ed ossa?
TF - SI! Quando ho avuto l'idea per zombiewestern il progetto era concepito come un film con attori veri, ma non avevo certo il budget così mi sentii senza speranza. Dopo parlai con un mio amico circa uno zombie movie con dei pupazzi (quanto sarebbe potuto essere fico?) e improvvisamente vidi davanti ai miei occhi questo universo.
SC - Che tipo di distribuzione avrà It Came From The West? So che state preparando un DVD interamente in inglese. Ci puoi anticipare qualcosa su eventuali Extra contenuti nell’edizione?
TF - Non penso ci saranno molti Extra, quando stavo lavorando al film ero parecchio stressato e non ho avuto il tempo di realizzare nessun "dietro le quinte". Ho gli storyboard, alcuni disegni e alcune foto. Speriamo di ottenere delle voci in Inglese e Spagnolo per il DVD.
SC - It Came From The West è già un piccolo Cult e personalmente non vedo l'ora di vedere nuovamente il nostro Virgil contro i morti viventi. Ti prego dimmi che ci sarà un sequel!!!
TF - Sono grato che tu me l'abbia chiesto. Stiamo lavorando su un lungometraggio insieme ad una casa di produzione spagnola chiamata Perro Verde. Speriamo che ci sarà una trilogia, iscrivetevi alla Newsletter di zombiewestern.com per maggiori info.
SC - Stai attualmente lavorando ad un nuovo progetto?
TF - Sono molto impegnato sia a scuola che con i progetti di zombiewestern, perciò non mi occuperò di regia.

TF - So che il mio film è andato bene, sono felice che vi sia piaciuto. Se il mondo fosse improvvisamente attaccato dagli zombie, noi saremo le persone che sanno cosa fare (abbiamo visto i film). Sangue, budella e pisciasotto (weak-pissers è l'epiteto con cui viene chiamato il povero Virgil)!!! Virgil forever!!!

SC - How was your passion for animation born and when did you decide it would have become your profession, together with the director one?
TF - I have been drawing small comics and crazy monsters my entire childhood, my love for movies started with movies like Alien, Indiana Jones, Star wars, Terminator and so on. I started on the zombiewestern project, after a couple of music videos, and a very bad shortmovie. Last year I got accepted on the Danish film school, and have three years left.
SC - The first characters that come to mind while watching It Came From The West are obviously the famous Muppets. Are you also a fan of Jim Henson's legendary puppets?
TF - Of course! Jim Henson has created so much good, and there is an empty spot waiting to be filled. I think people will always be fascinated by puppets, at least I will. 3D is taking over the fantastic creatures we see in movies today, but I miss some magic, something real.
SC - In your short film we noticed a lot of tributes to the unforgotten Spaghetti Western movies. What are your favourite Italian Westerns?
TF - Sergio Leone is my absolute favourite director of all times. I haven't seen so many Itallian westerns beside that, but Django by Sergio Corbucci is also very great.
SC - Combining western to horror is not a very exploited way by cinema. How did you get this idea?
TF - I really can't remember, I just think the two genres would fit perfect for each other. The dust and the dirt together with blood and guts, it's perfect. I think there is much more to explore in this universe, the short is just a glimpse of it.
SC - Have you ever thought about filming with human actors?
TF - YES! When I got the idea for zombiewestern, it was meant as a live action movie, but of course I didn't have any budget, so it was kind of hopeless. I later talked with a friend of mine, about zombiemovies with puppets (how cool could that be?), and I suddenly saw the zombiewestern universe with puppets.
SC - What kind of distribution will It Came From The West have? I know you are setting up an "only-english" dvd. Could you anticipate this edition's extra content for us?
TF - I don't think there will be so much extra, when I was working on the shortfilm I was so stressed, that I didn't have the time to make any "behind the scenes". I have the storyboard, some drawings and some pictures. We are hoping to get English and Spanish voices for the dvd.
SC - It Came From The West is already a little cult movie and, personally, I can't wait to see our Virgil vs. the undead again. Please tell me there will be a sequel!!!
TF - I'm glad you asked. We are working on a feature film, together with a Spanish production company called Perro Verde. Hopefully there will be a trilogy, sign up for the newsletter at zombiewestern.com for more info.
SC - Are you currently working on a new project?
TF - I am pretty busy at school, and I am of course involved with the zombiewestern feature, witch I'm not going to direct because of my school.
